School Behavioral Consultation
A Board Certified Behavioral Analyst is able to enter your child’s classroom and observe your child in their classroom environment. The BCBA takes data on exhibited behavior, interviews teachers and support staff, and then makes recommendations for the classroom. If requested, the BCBA will write a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) based on the consultation. This can be paid for by the parent or the school district. Functional Behavior Assessments
A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is written based on the function, or purpose, of the child’s behavior. It is done so that a Behavioral Intervention Plan may be put in place to change the child’s behavior in the classroom. It relies on a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior and to help teachers and support staff select interventions to directly address the problem behavior. The focus of a Functional Behavioral Assessment is on identifying significant, child-specific social, affective, cognitive, and/or environmental factors associated with the occurrence and/or non-occurrence of specific behaviors. This gives a better understanding of the function, or purpose, behind the student’s behavior. A FBA is completed by the BCBA through Ability Builders & Associates. This includes a thorough interview of the parents/care givers and school staff . The child’s school records are reviewed, and data is collected on targeted behaviors. FBA’s are requested by the school district as well as parents.

Behavioral Plan Development and Implementation
A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) utilizes the information from the made from the Functional Behavior Assessment and puts them into a written plan of action for managing a student’s behavior. Once the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is completed by Ability Builders & Associates, a BIP is written and established for the child. The Behavior Analyst (BCBA) then provides hands-on training in the classroom to teach and guide the teachers and support staff the plan for behavior modification. Frequent communication is necessary between both parties in order to remain on track with the implementation phase.
